Markham is by far one of our favorite wine producers so we were SO EXCITED to go to their facility for the first time.
The tasting room is cool and contemporary with a beautiful koi pond outside. They also happened to have a photography display of Rolling Stone covers taken by famed photographer, Baron Wolman. As two photographers, we were certainly in heaven tasting wine and looking at the gallery display.
Although Markham specializes in Merlot, they have many wine offerings, and they’re certainly nothing to sneeze at. Their 2011 Sauvignon Blanc was amazing and some of the best I think I’ve ever had. Their 2011 Chardonnay was equally as delicious because it wasn’t overly oaked like stereotypical Charddy (that’s my silly nickname for Chardonnay).
Markham currently offers two different types of wine tastings, the Rock & Roll and Estate. Per our usual fashion, we split them between the two of us. That way we get to taste them all collectively. If you’re a couple going wine tasting, that’s the way to do it.
Terri had the Rock & Roll tasting for $15 while I had the Estate tasting for $25. Together we tasted nine wines total. Needless to say we were feeling pretttttty prettttttty good by the time we left. LOL. That might explain why we left with a case of wine, two t-shirts and new members of their wine club. LOL.
There wasn’t one wine that didn’t blow our minds, but there was one in particular that rocked my world. The 2008 Altrusit Cabernet Sauvignon. As soon as I had my first whiff I screamed “Pancakes!” because that’s exactly what it smelled like. It is a heavenly, graceful aroma of maple, caramel and freshly buttered pancakes that melts your legs as much as it melts in your mouth. This wine is not to be missed, and is part of the mixed case we brought home. It is truly a work of art.
If you’re ever in Napa Valley, give Markham a visit. You won’t be sorry.
They are conveniently located on St. Helena Highway. They also offer tours by reservation (for $30) which includes your tasting. You can also follow them on Twitter @MarkhamVineyard.
