Although it’s dubbed the “smallest tasting room in the world”, Carhartt should also be dubbed the “coolest tasting room in the world”. With only standing room for four (comfortably), they make you feel like you’re either at home or hanging out at someone’s wine bar in their kitchen. If you’re looking for an authentic country wine experience, this is the one for you!
It’s hard to miss if you’ve never been there, but I can guarantee you’ll never miss it again once you’re there. It’s literally a little shack on Grand Ave. in the heart of Los Olivos.
As soon as you walk in, you’re treated like a regular. The day that Terri and I stopped by, two Carhartt family members were serving AND seemingly entertaining at the same time. It was screams, laughs and non-stop pouring for the day’s tastings.
They have fun music, amazing vineyard photography from the Santa Ynez valley on the wall, and an adorable yet chill enclosed patio in the back.
Carhartt grows and specializes in Petite Syrah, Sangiovese, Grenache, Syrah, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. If we had to pick our favorite of the tastings, I would say their 2009 Estate Syrah was the most memorable of the bunch.
I have to admit, if I had the choice of owning a wine tasting room full of frills and expensive fixtures or something like Carhartt that’s feel warm, extra small and rustic – their format would win hands down. Give me a wood shack over snobby commercialism any day of the week. It rocked.
Stop by for a tasting if you’re in the area. They are located on the corner of Grand Ave and HWY 154 in downtown Los Olivos.
